How Do I Choose a Wedding Veil Width?

Three major factors that can help determine which wedding veil width to select are: (1) the style of wedding dress, (2) the volume or fullness desired in a veil, and (3) the length of the wedding veil itself. One or all of these factors can help in choosing a bridal veil width.

STYLE OF DRESS: The style of the wedding dress really helps to dictate the direction one should go with choosing a bridal veil width. If a wearing an A-Line, Sheath or Column (straight dress), or Mermaid wedding gown, the veil width really can be any width. However, if wearing a ballgown dress, one should stick with the widest with of 108". Fuller gowns require fuller wedding veils for the best look.

VOLUME OR FULLNESS (Pouf): If a bride does not want a lot of volume or fullness otherwise known as "poufiness", choose a 72" width or 54" width for the least amount of veil volume. Poufiness is created by the amount of fabric gathered to the comb, so the least amount of gather, the least amount of width. But again, dress style plays a major part in looking your best when choosing a veil width. So think about that first.

LENGTH OF VEIL: The decision may have already been made as to the desired length of veil. But width may be another dilemma. The truth of the matter is, shorter veils can be worn in all widths. So the shorter your bridal veil the more it depends upon your personal preference. If you don't want poufiness, choose a 54" or 72" width. The standard width is 72" and it looks great with almost all wedding dresses styles outside of a ballgown style. A 54" width looks very sleek with straight column or sheath bridal gowns but not as attractive with an A-line. If you desire a longer veil such as a chapel veil or cathedral veil, it is best to go with a 72" width for straighter gowns and stick with 108" width for ballgown styles.
